Firestone, Barberton filled with excitement: Teams set to face off after earning motivating victories last weekend. - Akron Beacon Journal (Akron, OH)

Sep. 7--Take 1: Excitement building at Firestone With a 35-27 win at Streetsboro last week, Firestone's football program snapped a 21-game losing streak. It also was first-year head coach Tim Flossie's first win at the school. 'The big thing for us is that it was a tough game as well,' Flossie said. 'They won a tough game that wasn't easy. And the kids went nuts afterwards. They ripped off their helmets and went to the middle of the field and just went crazy. Even on Saturday, they were at the JV game in the rain and they still had smiles on their faces.' Firestone athletic director Brian Fuller said: 'It was a huge win. The players and even the band were incredibly happy.'

The win gives the Falcons (1-1) momentum heading into Friday night's game at Barberton. The Magics are riding their own high after an emotional 29-28 win last week at home against East. Barberton (2-0) scored on the final play of the game to cut East's lead to 28-27. Instead of kicking the extra point, Magics coach Jay Glaze went successfully for the two-point conversion. The Firestone-Barberton contest will be broadcast live on WHLO (640-AM) and WZIP (88.1-FM) and, in my opinion, this is a must-see game just because of the excitement and enthusiasm still felt by both teams. Take 2: Stow record On Tuesday, the Stow boys golf team did something it hadn't done in 16 years: defeat Hudson. Led by senior Doug Underwood, junior Steve Bednar, junior Jeff Steiger and senior Scott Hamlin, the Bulldogs finished with a team score of 145, which also set a school record. Hudson's total was 152. 'I'm extremely satisfied and I feel really good for them,' said Stow coach Ken Miller. 'They knew they could do it and they had the confidence. The way they did it was impressive.' Underwood, Stow's No. 1 player, shot a school-record 4-under-par 32. Bednar, the No. 2 golfer, was 3-over after four holes but rallied to post birdies on holes 6, 7 and 9 to finish even-par. No. 3 golfer Steiger registered nine consecutive pars; Hamlin finished with a 41. Take 3: Pick up the pins The popularity of high school bowling in recent years led the Ohio High School Association to sanction it as a varsity sport. In November, the inaugural season begins. According to Bob Goldring, an assistant commissioner and director of information with the OHSAA, there are 30 boys teams and 31 girls teams in the area heading into this school year. Girls field hockey, which is an OHSAA-sanctioned sport, has just three area girls teams: Hudson, Kent Roosevelt and Stow. There are no area boys teams. Meanwhile, another sport gaining popularity is the club sport of lacrosse. As of the 2005-06 school year, area boys lacrosse teams included Hoban, Hudson, Jackson, Kent Roosevelt, Medina, North Canton Hoover (the Division II state champions), Revere, Walsh Jesuit and Wooster. Girls teams included Hudson, Jackson, Kent Roosevelt, Medina, Revere, Stow, Walsh Jesuit and Wooster. (Walsh Jesuit edged Stow 5-4 for the Division II state club title.)

For the OHSAA to sanction lacrosse, it would need 150 schools statewide participating -- roughly twice the number now offering it. Take 4: WRA starts well The Western Reserve Academy boys soccer team had a strong showing in the Hoosier Cup Championship this past weekend in Bloomington, Ind. The Pioneers defeated Bishop Chartard (Ind.) 6-0 in the semifinal game but dropped a tough 2-1 match to Evansville (Ind.) in the championship match. Overall, the Pioneers won four of their first five games. Take 5: Food for thought I don't think I've ever written about food, but I couldn't resist this one.

During the opening weekend of the high school football season (on a Thursday, actually), I was assigned to cover Buchtel at Steubenville.

I arrived early so I decided to make my way to the concession stand for 'dinner.' I noticed an item called 'Taco-in-a-Bag.' Naturally, I had to try something like that, just out of curiosity. It was a bag of Doritos, which the woman behind the counter crunched before opening. Then, she spooned in ground beef, lettuce and chopped tomatoes, stuck a spoon in the bag and gave it a few tosses, handed it to me and said, 'Enjoy.' I did!
